Mirrors

I had a son once-
I married daughters twice-
Two others sang their own song
Out on the edge somewhere
Beyond the scope of my vision.

From my heart’s song
Imperfect as it has been
Also the song of my heart’s heart
Scarred as we both will always be,
These melodies sang themselves…

Five families of different sorts,
Some with men, one without,
Four with beloveds from across
The human race in all its varied beauties
That manifest themselves
In children who look like
The very soul of poetry.

In this way,
In these faces,
In the purity and reach of love,
We know our song was true.
