Sonnet on the Passing of John Glenn

Some there are who take us to the heavens
Though we never meet them face to face,
Lighting dreams that never really leave us,
Weaving into all our lives their trace.
You were one of these, afraid of nothing,
Not even the nothingness of space,
Riding rockets, orbiting our larger
Home, the first to celebrate its grace.
A quiet man with kindly eyes and manners,
A hero and a winner of your race,
You came back home and served your country well then,
As happy in a far more mundane place.
Among the stars you flash and ride again
As when we watched as children, Colonel Glenn.
