Against Despair (sonnet)

Lift your head up now and dry your tears-
The time to hide and shiver’s not yet here.
There may well come times to go underground,
To gather silent where we can’t be found.
But not today-today’s a day to fight,
To call back to remembrance what’s been right
Forever and is still-we’re all still here-
Our purpose can’t be served by hate or fear.
Put those things down; they’re someone else’s tools.
If we embrace them now, we are all fools
Deserving more of what we see we’ve done
By our complacent, weak web now unspun.
No-now instead we stand and speak and write
Protecting what is good from threatening night.
