An Old Woman’s Love Sonnet

For what I was and still am wont to be,
I have no one to thank for setting free
The dream of love and hope of dreams to come
But you, whose constant love has led me home.
When sodden thoughts and grey dreams gather in,
Your hand, your eyes, your words forever win
Me back from sullen days of heaviness
And build the path back to clear happiness.
The darkness of the past has given way
To this bright world in which our work is play;
So, contrast-framed, our open present lies
Beneath the clear sweetness of lovers’ skies.
Between what was and what is yet to be
Lie hope and faith and love for you in me.
