Summer’s Love in Winter

High Summer’s here with strong green growth today,
But even as we harvest now, we know
She never has and never will she stay;
She’ll step aside for Fall and Winter’s snow.
So we gather sweetness, lushness, all
That we can find now in these kinder days,
Always with an eye to early Fall
That’s coming, as this yellowed leaf-fall says.
Though harsher days will come, we’ll burrow in
And warm ourselves with hands and Winter greens
We gather now, for cold will come to thin
The gardens quickly and reduce our means.
These herbs and leaves will then remind us of
The Summer’s beauty like that of our love.
