Perspective (a love sonnet)

You, the flowing Gulf Stream in my life,
You, who animate my heart and mind,
Who taught me clearly sorrow’s afterlife
Makes space for realized dreams of every kind–
Like late light flashing final over trees
Illuminating freshest, topmost leaves
Of oldest branches that the sun last sees,
Clear-sighted love lights what the heart perceives.
From your perception, I have taken mine,
So seeing at long last myself as you
Have seen me and my weaknesses as fine,
As chances to create one from we two,
This is how you gave me back to me-
If I could now make you see what I see…
