Sonnet on the Occasion of My Sister’s Birthday

Of all the ties that keep us bound together,
Of all the hopes that brighten darkish days,
A heart’s own friend is best in stormy weather,
Light in the night, connected for always.
Support and comfort of a child is sweet,
Yet sweeter still is family that we choose;
And even when we do not often meet,
There’s something in us that will remain fused.
Of all the world, a chosen sister stays
Within the closest precincts of the heart,
A steady love regardless of the ways
Or times the two may longest be apart.
This song then celebrates the birth today
Of my own chosen sister.

Love always.
