To the Doctors

You know your way around a heart, a lung;
You spent long years in learning all your skills.
You understand what habits to avoid;
You know what sickens us and, too, what kills.
I know you have a sculptor’s talent when
You hold a scalpel or a scope in hand;
I understand why you might be impatient
That anxieties of mine still stand.
Here’s what I would have you keep in mind
As you lightly joke and talk before
You make that first incision in his side
To heal what you’ve healed thus just one time more:
Not one, but two spirits lie before you,
Treat us gently and well, I implore you.
