Son

My body bears a scar
has done for nearly thirty years-
they took you by force
sent you into the world
forever after separated from me
your own beautiful creature.

What remains invisible
but more deeply real
-the scar on my heart
where it tore in two
never to be whole again
half walking out into the world.

I cannot protect you-
neither tears nor pain
not even your own mistakes-
none would be in my control
but when your heart bleeds
my own weeps red for you.
