Washing It Off

The world is building walls and arming children
With ugliness, with hate-fueled words, with snark,
Depicting xenophobic minds as patriots
Creating lies-based straw men, easy marks.
They shout the best who shout the loudest, longest,
Thus keeping us distracted from what’s real
They are the present evil incarnation
Of all that’s mean, of fascism’s ideal.
By using language to construct connections
In amygdaloid brains fed on strife,
They insult both their followers’ humanity
And language’s sacred role in human life.
Still, all their rhetoric has lesser power
Than wordless stillness of a garden hour.
