The Down Side (sonnet)

Pressing needs may cause us great discomfort
As we wonder whether they’ll be met;
We need food and shelter, love and friendship,
Useful work, a chance at health, and yet
All these can be handled if we’re careful
Not to ask of others way too much,
And we can give in return what we have:
Listening ears, a kind word, gentle touch.
The trouble comes when love’s normal intention
Turns to great devotion, spirits twined
Into just one, for then no needs will matter
If one spirit’s halflife cannot find
The blessed other on whom is dependent
Happiness and life and love transcendant.
