Ladybug

Ladybug at Winter’s end,
Why come crawling now, my friend?
If you wait a little while,
Spring will come and Sun will smile
On your good work in the garden,
Now there’s nothing! Ground’s still hardened!

In high Summer, you and I,
Side by side will satisfy
All our need for growing things,
Me with trowel, you with wings
Carrying you where you may
Make your dragons, eat and play.

But for now and for another
Month or so, the cold may smother
Your best hopes for life outside,
And in here’s too dry besides.
Out of space and out of time,
You and I are out of rhyme.
