Wind and Water

Pine branches dip and roll and spin
as chill and darkened rolling winds
rush everywhere, undisciplined,
send Winter off in undertow.

When long ago I was a child
a breaker caught me, rolled me wild-
new aspect of the ocean mild-
I learned that day what I still know.

Terrifying empty spaces
lie behind most friendly faces;
those the heart most close embraces
cut most deeply, bring most low.

May we all have that one friend
with whom we need not pretend
when in whose embrace we mend,
soft breezes breathe, calm waters flow.
