Music Underground (sonnet)

Deep down in the yearning of the soil
For light, a melody takes shape and calls-
A musicality that echoes Summer
Even as the last pin oak leaf falls.
It sings the fractal structure of the soil web:
Its harmonies and cadences repeat
While frozen crust of leafmold hides its beauty,
Protecting its warm heart from ice and sleet.
This soil song is hidden for the moment,
But harmonies in Spring will come again
As hands and feet start digging muddy gardens
And greet surfacing earthworms as old friends.
So soon, but late enough, the growing season
Returns to sing us back to health and reason.
