Garden Planning (sonnet)

imageA garden plan’s a sign of hope in Winter
That all the colors, not just white, return
Each Spring to call us out into the garden,
Forgetting how cold made us taciturn.
With every seed that’s started way too early,
With all the dirt that falls on kitchen floors,
The gardener’s hand starts pushing the next season,
While all the time she’s watching it snow more.
Still, hope’s triumphant over long experience;
It’s possible that growing season will
Come early just this once, so get those seeds in
And watch for germination’s early thrill!
Such hopes link happiness from year to year
And bring the perfect garden Winter-near.
