Clumsy Poems for My Lover

Days like this, when my words fail to rhyme
And every line distorts its sense and sound,
When even metric feet run out of time,
One leg gone numb, smooth gait cannot be found-
When discipline is all that keeps me here,
The need to give the world I see some shape
Or color or at least an image clear
Enough to share a bit of this landscape-
Yes, on these days the best that I can hope
For is that, out of all this irritation,
Some clarity will come, some lovely trope,
A single pearl amid the aggravation.
It’s on these days I’m happy to have learned
You love me when your love for me’s unearned.
