Winter Meditation

Two old dogs snore gently as the snow
Falls on branches that already hold
Mountains of what will be, in the Spring,
Water for the gardens after cold.
But for now, the soil holds its breath,
Rests a while, lets earthworms deeper down
Create their young, anticipate fresh growth
When some months from now seeds will be sown.
This silent house holds seeds of everything
Worth having, from the love of an old hound
To seeds of glorious Summer days to come-
In packets or in lovers’ eyes they’re found.
In gratitude and Winter meditation
Is found hot Summer growth’s best preparation.
