Song for Epiphany

The older I get
The faster they come–
I’d thought that by sixty
I would have been done
With flashes of insight
With fresh comprehension
Of my past and present,
With life’s education.

That’s not how it happens
If one keeps on thinking,
Keeping one’s brain
Always swimming, not sinking.
So I’ll tighten my seatbelt
And let them come fast;
Love’s greatest epiphanies
Come at the last.
