In These Days

In these days of calm life
winnowed down to what we really need,
we sculpt our time,
removing what doesn’t fit,
discarding the bits of stone
we tried three times
to persuade it should stick,
sometimes returning to the pieces
we once carelessly lost,
fitting them to the heart
of who we are
and will finally be,
so that when we step back
on the last day or later,
we know who we always were.
