Open (Sonnet)

You teach me how to love my weaknesses
Because they let you in, like sunlight through
A broken branch high in the forest makes
A spot where seeds can germinate anew.
Too much false strength in my old independence
Attracted parasitical complaint
From my old lovers wanting me to carry
Them through life. Their weight would make me faint!
But you have shown me how to share all burdens,
How such sharing in everything makes
Me-and you as well-just that much stronger,
Able now to grow from past mistakes.
I love the leaning now-I understand
How open hearts begin with open hands.
