Lindsay’s Sonnet

(For a beautiful soul)

When those I love begin to fuss and fight
(And truth be told, there are few I don’t love),
The undertow of anger clouds their sight,
Dims clarity of mind shed from above.
Attention focused on polarization,
Opinions, wins and losses in debates
About directions taken in our nation
Turn each mind to defining what it hates.
But I see under all of that the ocean
Of deep, abiding love that binds us all
And wish these angry waves of strong emotion
Were seen aright as superficial squalls.
There’s more to be considered than I know;
Love lights the path better than anger’s glow.
