These Old Shoes

These old shoes
scuffed and worn at the heel
needing a better cleaning
than is possible
after so many years–

they cradle my feet
warm me softly
enclose my toes
soften every step
on sharp mornings.

I’ve treated them roughly
sometimes dared them
to split up
one escaping
for the other’s sake.

Persistence in shoes
on every thorny path
through muddy streets–
that’s more grace
than I hoped for.
