20 Oct 2015 – An Ode to Autumn

I celebrate crisp Falls’ first frosted windshield.
Pale, drowsy dawn not now in any hurry,
lingering in red crowned woods and stubble fields,
cold coverlets of frost where squirrels still scurry
here and there with Winter stockpiles to conceal.
No chance they’ll be remembered, but no worry,
no matter where she looks she’ll find a treasure
waiting when the New Year’s snows pave silent drifts
across the landscape. Bounty beyond measure
for she herself has hidden all these gifts.

Stalactite stars drip down in icy quiet.
Stalagmite cities rise in clamored answer.
No vital signs except the sounds of riot,
no motion but the frantic thrashing dancers.
For too long nurished on seductive diets
until the din metastasized to cancer.
I stayed until the symptoms grew – and dire
warnings sent me flying from the neon lights.
A madman lingers long in…
