Salisbury Cathedral

Music rises with incense
dissipating into upper caverns
all songs consonantless.

On the other side of impossible walls
magpies walk the grounds
cut the air with their tails.

They witness the great stony walls
settle into the platter of earth
after floating above soil in the night.

Inside, passion and poetry find
old men and women no one knows
first sang them strong.

Faint wash of both
Lingers in the incense
the young breathe in.
