Turning (sonnet)

Time comes soon for going underground,
Dark mornings and long nights to settle in,
Assimilating everything we’ve found:
New truths, connections learned, dive deep within.
When Autumn comes again, her gentle touch,
Beginning with grey mornings, lesser light,
Calls us to silence that we’ve missed so much,
Of which, in growing seasons, we lose sight.
So we, like earthworms, burrow soon to flee
Ice, snow and wind soon coming to renew
The earth that, needing sleep as much as we,
Has greater good sense than we often do.
So welcome darkness in these short Fall days
As means of teaching us earth’s wiser ways.
