To My Body

Tell me how to love you
when you betray me
close the door
to meditation
to singing
to everything but this
consciousness of nerve and bone.

Meditate light to surround you
space to comfort you
openness for currents
to run
to fly freely
to my bone and muscle–
still you confound my thoughts.

Pain is only perception
not immanent death
nor blindness
nor loss of speech
nor inability
to grasp a pen or idea
for shaping the mind’s own self.

Out in the broad world
birds still sing
vines climb fences
seasons turn
seeds germinate
sending roots deep
to find their sources of life.

Now I long for Winter’s cold
for snow to cover gardens
ice to kill potato beetles
leaves to layer and rot
to promise a new season
for open minds, hearts, spines
in fresh springfalls of the living.

Finding joy while hurting is not easy, but it sure is delicious when it presents itself! Heard a man speak this weekend who is old and near the end of his life…”When you cannot do what you did before, you do what matters most.” Robert D. Hales, of the Quorum of the 12 Apostles, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
