Thoughtlessness (sonnet)

“Guns won’t kill you; only people can,”
Say those who are big gun and bullet fans.
And “cigarettes aren’t deadly,” say the ones
Who love stock options as others love guns.
There was a time an idea’s assertion
Was met with intellectual exertion,
And if it was found to be in error,
It would be retracted by its bearer.
Now our lives are shaped by who shouts loudest,
By those who can scream “I am right!” the proudest.
No more does careful thought or evidence
Matter as they say with confidence,
“Strong gun control laws would be just a trifle
As long as I can have my assault rifle.”
