Yesterday you hung red curtains
In this room where I write and rest
Electrodes buzzing away pain.
You travel through chill air
Rumble down fast highways
Careful eyes preserving you for me.
When the October sun emerges
The room glows with watery red light
Affection paints every corner.
Twin privileges of warmth and quiet time
Build feather beds and staircases
To rest from old bones and rise up again.
Only this pain still remains:
I cannot repay infinite kindness
With only this human heart.
