Nurses’ Sonnet

I wept away the morning at the shock
Of this new disability of age;
With you not here, I couldn’t even talk
About my need to turn the mental page.
I reached for music – could not find my song;
Bleak silence had displaced both pitch and words.
One smile among the tears didn’t last long
At seeing our bright fountain full of birds.
But then I went to see a new NP
For something else completely unrelated;
Her careful listening and her calm calmed me,
Her help far more than I anticipated.
It takes only a little gentle care
To show someone a path out of despair.
