What I Learned Yesterday (sonnet)

See that hungry person over there?
No, not that far away…here, right beside you.
Is your best help for hunger just the prayer
You utter while your dinner is inside you?
Is it only the children who lack food
Exciting your compassion for the needy?
Are they the only ones on whom you brood
As you avoid the grown ones as too seedy?
If you can’t feel compassion for the grown,
If poverty must have a cuter face,
If you would sooner judge the poor man’s groan,
If you can’t imagine yourself in his place,
Imagine this instead: all of your wealth
Gone in a day by accident of health.
