Rockets

Long ago we used to watch
The night launches of rockets
Making a sun of night,
Shaking off the Earth,
Flying, sailing high and deep
Into our childish imaginations.

Those blazes and the reply
Of ocean waves tossed
With bioluminescence
Shaped our expectations
Of magic in the world
In our own lives to come.

One of us fell fast
Like a useless stage
Having spent its fuel
While the other was saved
By the trajectory of lovingkindness
By the star it shot into the future.
