Natural Sermons

Belief in what’s hidden
Grows with the carrots
When love tends the garden.

Those plain green shells
Hide beans painted
Magenta and purple-
Who knows how?

No one knows how
Purple the carrots will be
Until they’re unearthed.

The heart of a Donskoi
Hides sweetness unknown
Before the beloved’s hand
Opens it to offer a taste
To her own beloved.

Potatoes are the most mysterious,
Show lacy leafy tops
From another country
Hiding unknown winter stores.

Every tuber teaches
A lesson in magic:
Every pod preaches
Its natural sermon
To heal disbelief
Even as it feeds
The sparrows and us.
