This Old Dog

Old Dog has gone mostly deaf,
Sleeps in the sun,
Starts when I enter his field of vision,
Turns round brown eyes to me,
Tipping his black feathered tail,
Asks why I sneaked up on him.

All I can do is kiss his head,
Stroke his inky side and back,
Sit with him for a little while,
Whisper into his silky ear,
“I love you no matter what,
And I will take care of you forever.”
