For Our Mother

Deadly heat to balance coldest winter –
Ice that ripped the gutters from the house –
Follow now by cracked earth in the gardens–
Rain withheld or burned dry from the clouds –
Drills have pierced her flesh – her lungs polluted –
Chemicals injected made her sick –
Twisting to avoid collapse that’s coming –
She tires of feeding all the parasitic.
Those shout the loudest to deny the trouble
Who profit most from things just as they are,
Look only to this day and never further,
Believe that thinking takes things way too far.
And as they toast successes, the Great Mother
Will shake us off, with only a brief shudder.
