Even Greater Riches …a sonnet

I thought I knew the sweetest sound of all,
That soft white rush of winter’s first snowfall,
Or wings of hummingbirds close by my ear,
Or footfall of a gently grazing deer.
But sweeter than all those, that low, soft voice,
Of all vibrations, my former first choice,
The voice that calmed my fears and moved my heart
To peaceful contemplation from the start.
For years that sound has been my anchor through
Rough seas–the light that brings me back to you;
That cannot change: you are my guiding star
Without which I would break loose and drift far.
But when I heard our son sing to his own,
I heard such sweetness I had never known.
