Staying (sonnet)

This house has stood far longer than we two
And will be here long after we are gone,
Its stone foundation cracked and worn, it’s true,
But steady through all change it’s undergone
Indifferent cold of ice brought pieces down;
Hot hatred broke a bit of what we love,
But still our tiny fortress stands and draws
Its earthen strength below, light from above.
The beauty that was here before we came
Is here still, blending with all we have done
As well as all the natural miracles
That spring up every year with warm spring sun.
Let’s not let hate or indifference chase
Us from our peaceful, beautiful right place.
