Wet Season

Images and ideas
Once clothed in proper words
Now hang disconsolate
Tired and weepy
Dripping in mildew
Like Spanish moss
Like tentacles of man of war
In this ocean of rain.

Nothing gets through
Not sonnet nor song
Still the diamonds of rain
Drip from needles
Swan dive from willows
Weeping onto watery soil
Where earthworms swim
Where tomato roots drown.

Come drown with me
If this is the world
We have for our happiness
Let us grow gills
Make our finny way
Through the sodden air
Through the watery mud
Laughing with the toads.
