Patience

I am not an Old Soul
Whatever that means.
It took you years
To teach me myself,
To show me our truth,
To open the door I needed
To walk through to be happy.

All those years you waited,
Patiently holding the keys
Outside the door I didn’t see —
You could have walked through
Without me holding you back
With one of the legion
Who would have danced through
That door with you.

Instead you waited for me,
Sometimes carrying me,
Sometimes coaxing me,
Sometimes calling me,
Mostly just waiting for me.
I haven’t gotten easier,
But I am with you,
No Old Soul,
Just here
In love.
