John’s Sonnet

When every art, including this, fades gray
Before the depth of love I daily try
To give a voice and, failing, try again,
Only to put my pen down with a sigh –
When all the world you’ve made for me shines bright,
As after rain on sunny days like this,
But words are too weak, hazy to express
My gratitude for seeing what you miss –
When measuring my privileges takes
More art than I know I will ever own,
And all I offer is the words I have,
As fleeting as a dry leaf wind has blown –
It’s then, when I despair most of my skill,
I know, weak as I am, you’ll love me still.
