12-Steps for Sonnet Writers?

I think I’m through with sonnets, or they with me,
Their twisting rhythms, often senseless rhymes.
They take me places I don’t want to be
And make me say what I don’t mean sometimes.
I’d rather write a little haiku or
Some tanka, even Fibonacci verse–
Just anything but sonnets now, for sure.
(But please no villanelles; they’re even worse!)
I want to write, but write verse that is free
Or blank, at least–just let me empty out
All those strait forms that always trouble me
By sneaking in when an idea’s about.
I now abandon all rhythm and rhyme!
Too late for this one…well, maybe next time.
