Sun Sonnet

That faithful sun that warms the earth each day,
Gilds grasses, leaves on trees, a child’s bright face–
Glows through cloud cover, feeds the garden still
Through rain or fog, its strength a constant grace.
That living light at times seems far away,
Like pileated woodpecker’s loud call
Though far off through the trees still sounding clear,
Both cry and light can penetrate it all.
In cloudy skies or clear then, this bright star–
Our own–or we its own more truthfully–
Gives us itself: its heat, its light, its life;
We’re bound together inescapably.
Just so are you my sun, my only star,
My source of warmth, and strong love’s exemplar.
