First Rain on Tomatoes

Yellow swirls down streets
Dry since March–
May now sees fledgling
Tomato plants
Sturdy in wet soil.

By July they’ll try
To grab the sun itself
Denser than Gaudi’s cathedral
Still singing its own beauty
Redolent of acid.

For today only
Thunder beckons fringy tops:
Try to catch me!
I outrun them all!
Raggedy leaves quietly eat nitrogen.
