Warning (Song of the Gardener)

Lily-of-the-valley first plays gentle piccolos
While later tiny bells will sound each time a soft breeze blows.
But wait a while, and trumpets grow above sharp, flexing blades:
Daylily makes replacements for each instrument that fades.
Forget-me-nots in chorus sing their songs in palest blue
While braver iris wait a while to show a stronger hue.
The weedy flowers – violets and dandelions – share
Their nectars with the pollinators buzzing everywhere.
These flowering plants – and herbs also–pop up for every spring
Regardless of our efforts, so we need not do a thing,
But when it’s time to plant the kitchen garden – and that’s soon! –
We’ll both get sweaty, dirty, tired – we’ll sing a different tune.
Until the harder garden days are here, come have a drink!
Sit with me, for the work will be here faster than we think.
