Anniversary Sonnet 2015

We used to dance around the phallic pole
To celebrate the lovely first of May
When with the Earth we started a new year
With hot hands and soft lips both night and day.
“We might just use it up!” you warned me then
And I, not thinking, laughed and said, “That’s so.”
But here we are, some twenty-six years on,
That once-veiled future now is what we know.
Bound even closer now than we were then
When sex meant quick exhausting hours of play.
We understand much more than what we did:
Now that excitement permeates each day.
Like smoke from separate fires, our spirits blend,
Our lives one act of love now without end.
