Garlic Sonnet

Now comes the garlic, the most loving herb,
That comes back first from planting in the Fall–
With parsley, chervil, tarragon, it grows,
The first herbs green, but garlic first of all!
While coward basil huddles in the house
Because it knows cold air will turn it black,
You stretch and yawn and shoot up for the sun,
Reminding us that Summer will come back.
Your early growth, your later towering fronds,
Your swirling scapes that we can harvest first,
All lead to those most beautiful bulbs
With which our months-long work is reimbursed.
In all and each we take such great delight
As seeing your first growth in green Spring’s light!
