Love Longing for Summer

How can this be, my sturdy Love?
So many years have passed for us,
So many decades, even, of life,
Still, every lily is for you–
Tomatoes swelling, reddening,
Or turning orange, or brown and pink,
Swell like my heart when you come home.
The heavy dew or morning rain
On pumpkin vine leaves shows no sorrow–
There are no tears now, but enough
Of sadness seasoning too much joy.
Nothing stays the same, and yet
Things do not fall apart when love
And fire, as from the sun’s own flares
Feeds tendrils mapping me to you.
