Dreams of Summer Faces (Sonnet)

Acrid scents of lace tomato leaf
Perhaps protects its starry yellow flower,
As does the small fruit that potato makes
Keep predators away as sharply sour.
The faces of the sunflowers reach up
To catch the light and follow with their gaze
While, pulling their companion vines along,
They change for goldfinches at last their rays.
The trumpet of the morning glory sounds
In lavenders and purples overhead
While lilies’ larger horns and narrow blades
Drop morning’s dew onto our garden beds.
Though each of these in beauty has its part,
You are the face of Summer in my heart.
