Promise (Sonnet)

Shall I crack now like a seed for you
And reach up for your light as for the sun,
As when we first met you softly blew
One breath on my high walls, and they went down?
Since then many times I’ve built them up
Again and once again you breached them fast;
Until I finally acknowledged you
Would be inside my heart until the last.
That Last now comes into our view, My Love,
And though some say that marriage comes undone,
I see no further separation in
That end–no more than in this setting sun.
Just as the dropped seed rises to new light,
We’ll rise together after a brief night.

    Touching and beautiful work, Jane! I especially love the last line.
