Season Cycle Sonnet

These frozen days in later Winter’s grip,
When Earth and Sky alike are holding breath
Until the ice and snow begin to melt,
Are still as sleep and colder yet than Death.
But if we look more closely, we can see
The tiny footprints of a baby rabbit;
More careful listening reveals the bright
Voice of small birds resuming their Spring habits.
The Sun’s light is more fierce in snow’s reflection
Than even in Midsummer we will see,
As if to chase the haggard gloom of Winter
Into its place and set Spring’s birthing free.
Then watch as Earth that long had looked forsaken
By Life is once again warmed and awakened!
