Gardener’s Song

What feels like work in summer sun
In winter starts to look like fun.
The depth of snow and ice out there
Can make me long for sweaty air.
And lugging compost every day
Now looks as if it might be play.
My hands are clean as are my feet
I’m tired of seeing them so neat.
I yearn for mud between my toes
And allergens all up my nose!
My two poor dogs share my frustration
Life indoors is an aggravation.
The promise of an aching back
From putting buckets in the stack
And worn-out thumbs that harvest beans?
Oh what joy such exhaustion means!
Come Fall I’ll feel a different way,
But work seems pleasure for today.
